Celebrating its 80th anniversary is Hammond Castle, home of inventor,
electrical engineer, and collector John Hays Hammond, Jr. This medieval
style castle, constructed in 1926-29 served as home for Dr. Hammond’s
vast collection of Roman, medieval, and Renaissance artifacts and housed
the Hammond Research Corporation. Hammond produced over 800 inventions
including remote control via radio waves, for which generations of couch
potatoes are grateful. Self guided tours are offered mid June through
Labor Day, group tours and
functions by appointment. (HammondCastle.org) call for admission.
Just across the harbor sits Beauport, Sleeper-McCann House, summer retreat of collector, antiquarian and one of America’s first premier interior designers, Henry Davis Sleeper. Begun as a modest cottage in 1907, it grew to over forty rooms filled with curiosities, colored glass, folk art and china in every nook and alcove. Situated on a rock ledge with breathtaking views of the harbor, Beauport served as Sleeper’s escape, a backdrop for summer parties, and as a showcase for his professional skills. The house offers guided tours daily June 1- Oct 15, (closed Mondays), special functions, group tours and private receptions. (HistoricNewEngland.org/visit/homes/beauport.htm) $10.

In nearby the village of Essex is the country estate, Cogswell’s Grant.
