Mansions & Castles

Celebrating its 80th anniversary is Hammond Castle, home of inventor, electrical engineer, and collector John Hays Hammond, Jr. This medieval style castle, constructed in 1926-29 served as home for Dr. Hammond’s vast collection of Roman, medieval, and Renaissance artifacts and housed the Hammond Research Corporation. Hammond produced over 800 inventions including remote control via radio waves, for which generations of couch potatoes are grateful. Self guided tours are offered mid June through Labor Day, group tours and

The Sou'wester

Oilskin slickers, overalls and sou’wester hats were originally made of cotton sailcloth made waterproof with linseed oil. That’s the reason fishermen’s clothing is usually yellow.

What is a Schooner?

schooner (pronounced /ˈskuːnər/) is a type of sailing vessel characterized by the use of fore-and-aft sails on two or more masts with the forward mast being no taller than the rear masts. Schooners were first used by the Dutch in the 16th or 17th century, and further developed in North America from the early 18th century.
