Three to four hour excursion to view nature’s gentle giants feed and frolic. Only 15 miles off the coast of Gloucester.  All trips are fully narrated by a member of the Ocean Alliance (founded by the world renowned whale researcher Dr. Roger Payne).  Learn why whales breach and how we identify each humpback.  Let us explain the different feeding styles of the humpback whale. These are just some of the things you can learn from our ocean Alliance naturalist.

Fred was the pioneer of whale watching in the north of Boston area, and it all began on his small but popular sightseeing tour boat. Back in 1978 Fred was taking Gloucester visitors on trips to watch the local fishermen at work. Whales would often be sighted on these trips, and Fred realized that his passengers were fascinated by these gentle giants of the ocean.

In 1979 Fred brought approximately 600 passengers on designated “whale watching” trips aboard the 42 foot “Daunty” (named for Fred’s father, the fearless “Daunty” Douglass), and the rest is history.

Cape Ann Whale Watch, the company founded by Fred, now enters our 31st season. The company is now owned and operated by son Captain Jim Douglass and his partner Captain Nick Danikas. Cape Ann Whale Watch is a family run business. At the time of this writing 6 family members are employed by us. Cape Ann is the area’s most popular whale watch, and has carried more than half a million passengers to view the whales of Stellwagen Bank. Only our passengers enjoy the unique speed and comfort of the “Hurricane II”, the largest, fastest whale watch vessel in Gloucester. We pride ourselves on providing our passengers with the best possible whale watching experience, and look forward to seeing you aboard this season.

Sightings are guaranteed: in the unlikely event that no whales are sighted on your trip, you will receive a one time return ticket that will not expire or unlimited season pass for 1 calendar year.
