Award-winning works by Pulitzer prize playwright Lynn Nottage and Gloucester’s former poet laureate John Ronan come to downtown Gloucester’s Rogers Street Theatre on February 23-24. The Saturday evening performance and Sunday matinee also include two staged readings from Rockport New Year’s Eve’s ten-minute playwriting contest. The theme of the weekend is “Couples.” The plays contain mature language and subject matter, and more than a few surprises.
Poof, a one-act play by two-time Pulitzer winner Lynn Nottage, is a hilarious and haunting look at marriage and female friendship. Sometimes, a little magic intervenes when a woman’s had enough. Directed by Sally Nutt, the play features Kimberly Holliday and Christine Remus. Poof is produced by special arrangement with Playscripts Inc.

John Ronan’s Early Bird Special was a finalist in the Tennessee Williams/New Orleans one-act festival, a finalist in the NYC Strawberry Festival, and a winner in the New Works Festival at the Firehouse Theater in Newburyport. Ronan, who hosts Cape Ann TV’s “Writer’s Block” series, will also direct. Maybe Mom and Dad’s celebratory dinner has a surprise up its sleeve? Wrapped up in their own troubles, two sets of married children and their spouses don’t realize the upcoming event their aging parents are toasting. The three couples are played by Victor Brandalise, Tess Degen, Stephanie Eaton, Mary Flaherty, Steve Provizer, and Conor Reinold.

Filling out the program are two ten-minute play staged readings: Please Stay by Eric Weil and Power Out by Patrice Hamilton. Please Stay is an encounter between a female customer and a lively ATM machine, featuring Peter Berkrot and Tess Degen. Power Out, a winning play in the Rockport New Year’s Eve competition, offers a #MeToo glimpse of a business appointment gone awry. It features Peter Berkrot, Stephanie Eaton and Barbara Lasovick.

Tickets for both the 7:30 pm on Saturday, February 23 performance and the 3:00 pm on Sunday, February 24 matinee are $20 per ticket and can be purchased online or at the door.
