Recycled Robots Gallery

The Robots are coming! On September 4 a band of lifesize robots made from recycled materials will invade Gallery 53. Built by local artists Elizabeth Gauthier, Richard Honan, Deb Kracht, Brian Murphy, Hans Pundt and Chris Williams, these robots will be at your service around the gallery. Come join the fun at the reception on Saturday, September 7. They will be on display from September 4 to October 14.

Fortuny Gowns at The Hammond Castle Museum

Hammond Castle Museum has announced the identification of two original Mariano Fortuny gowns within the museum’s collection. Museum archivists believe the Fortuny gowns belonged to Irene Fenton Hammond, wife of John Hays Hammond Jr. of the Hammond Castle Museum. Both garments, dating between 1920 and 1930, are velvet tabard gowns in Fortuny’s “Eleonora” Renaissance style and feature Fortuny’s famous pleating. Enjoy a cool and free visit to Cape Pond Ice Company, icing Gloucester’s fleet since 1848. Cape Pond Ice was featured in Sebastian Junger’s account of The Perfect Storm. Tours highlight the history of the ice industry, with vintage film of natural ice harvests. See first hand 300-pound block ice being made (up to 350 tons per day), fishing vessels taking on ice and ice sculptures being carved in our historic icehouse on Gloucester’s working waterfront.
